Camp Diablo was the first camp of the Contra Costa Council and was located at the head of Mitchell Canyon on the northern flanks of Mt Diablo. The camp was located next to Mitchell creek which was dammed to provide a swimming pool for the Scouts the first summer.
The camp was near an oval tract which was used as a athletic field. In 1924 a permanent pool (60′ x 120′) was constructed on the property as well as a new road into the camp from the County road. In 1925 the camp was open for six weeks of camping, with over 100 scouts attending by both the Richmond Boy Scouts and the Contra Costa Boy Scouts.
In 1927 camp was open for four weeks. All Scouts were required to present a Doctor’s certificate of health within 48 hours of camp. In 1928, Associate Regional Executive Edward Curtis visited Camp Diablo and complemented the council on its progress of enrolling new scouts.
It is interesting to note that in June 1928, a news article mentions that a “Mountain Camp” for older scouts near Big Meadows will be conducted from July 21-August 4. Only First Class scouts who have attended Camp Diablo are allowed to attend the “Mountain Camp”. It is assumed that the Mountain Camp the newspaper is referring too is either Camp Wolfeboro or Camp Baxter.
